The Electrochemical and Surface Engineering group (SURF) has a long tradition in research in electrochemical systems. The group is part of the department Materials and Chemistry (MACH) of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The SURF group is internationally recognized for its expertise in unravelling mechanisms of electrochemical processes. Success indicators of SURF’s strong position are, among others: the mulitple bilateral contracts with several industries. SURF member Herman Terryn being the cluster leader of ‘Durability’ for the Materials Innovation Institute M2i in the Netherlands, and the creation in 2014 of the spin-off company Zensor by SURF member Yves Van Ingelgem. The work of two SURF members was recently recognized: the most prestigious award in Europe for Corrosion Science (Medal of European Federation of Corrosion) was awarded in 2014 to Herman Terryn, and Yves Van Ingelgem was recognized as Innovator of the Year by the prestigious MIT Technology Review. SURF member Johan Deconinck started electrochemical modelling in the 80’s and created the spin off company Elsyca, now worldwide known for the elctrochemical modelling. SURF published more than 250 papers last 5 years and 32 Ph.D.’s were defended.
